Abstract

Abstract:
Objective:
To study the power of self-care behaviour, pre-discharge records and
post-operative recovery to predict peripheral arterial occlusive disease patients’ recuperation after endovascular surgery.
Design: Predictive research.
Methodology: The subjects, selected by means of simple random sampling, were
77 peripheral arterial occlusive disease patients who had undergone endovascular surgery
and were receiving follow-up treatment at Siriraj Hospital’s Vascular Surgery and Special
Instrument and Follow-Up Clinic between June 2013 and June 2014. Data were collected
by means of (i) a personal and health information questionnaire; (ii) a self-care behaviour
questionnaire; (iii) a pre-discharge information questionnaire; and (iv) a walking-abilitybased post-operative recovery assessment questionnaire. The data were analysed in terms
of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, using multiple regression analysis.
Results: The study found that 47.4% of the subjects recovered well after the surgery,
whilst 46.7% showed good self-care behaviour and 53.2% indicated that they had
received substantial information before their discharge. The multiple regression analysis
identifed self-care behaviour as the only signifcant predictive factor, in 20.4% of the
patients’ post-operative recuperation (R2 = .204, F(3,73) = 6.253, p < 0.05).
Recommendations: Good self-care behaviour is likely to contribute positively
to post-operative recuperation. Thus, nurses are advised to develop self-care programmes
and apply them to their patients.
