The sample population consisted of 30 nursing school administrators and 91 retired nursing lecturers-25 in the Northern region, 37 in the Central and Eastern regions, 25 in the Northeastern region and 4 in the Southern region. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. The quantitative data were collected through an opinion questionnaire on retired nursing lecturers’ work conditions, which was completed by the administrators. The qualitative data were gathered by means of interviews with retired nursing lecturers about their health conditions.

According to the study, the nursing school administrators reported that retired lecturers-numbering 147-constituted 13.8 percent of the entire faculty. Most had master’s degree education, held lecturing positions and were employed as full-time teaching members of the faculty. Most of the nursing lecturers’ viewpoints on their post-retirement work conditions were positive; they were aware of their ability to contribute to the schools, the profession and society. Concerning health conditions, the study showed that, in general, the nursing lecturers displayed sound physical, mental, intellectual and psychosocial health. As they were capable of self-healthcare, their relatively good health contributed to their post-retirement work, despite their congenital diseases and physical decline due to old age.

The results of this study could be applied by nursing schools and professional organisations as policy-making guidelines to promote work conditions for retired nursing lecturers. Such application could increase the potential of schools, professional organisations and society.

Keywords : work conditions, health conditions, nursing lecturers, retirement
}, number={2}, journal={The Journal of Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council }, author={อรุณแสง ผ่องพรรณ and ศรีธัญรัตน์ วรรณภา and นันท์ศุภวัฒน์ เรมวล and แก้วปาน วันเพ็ญ and เลิศรัตน์ เพ็ญจันทร์ and อิสระมาลัย แสงอรุณ}, year={2013}, month={Jan.}, pages={63–80} }
