The main cause of anemia in older people is malnutrition, especially iron deficiency. Whilst mild anemia may affect its victims’ daily life, severe anemia is likely to result in their tendency towards hospitalisation, longer periods of hospitalisation and a higher death rate. Besides, anemia tends to have long-term effects on its victims’ cognitive and intellectual processes. At present, because symptoms of mild anemia are not easily noticed, anemia in older people is often overlooked or neglected by healthcare teams. Therefore, medical treatment is often directed only towards the obvious causes of hospitalisation.However, causes of anemia are considerably complex, and no conclusive information has been established in the light of the problems it causes, its effects and relevant studies on prevention and cure of anemia in older people in the context of Thai society. For this reason, nurses, who play an important role as older people’s caregivers, must realise that every older person may suffer from anemia. Proper screening is one way of ensuring timely treatment for older people. Moreover, proper dietary advice, together with the increased role of families and the community in caring for older people, may reduce the severity of anemia and its effects. Most importantly, studies on proactive approaches to the prevention of anemia in older people are highly recommended.Keywords : anemia, older people, overlooked problem}, number={4}, journal={The Journal of Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council }, author={สารีโส พรทิพย์}, year={2013}, month={Jan.}, pages={5–15} }
