Data collection period continued for 8 months, from May to December 2011. In total, the data were obtained from 47 informants, each with these qualifications: (i) being aware that s/he had been HIV-infected for 3 years or more; (ii) having applied sufficiency economy philosophy to his/her way of life; (iii) being at least 18 years old; (iv) having more than 499 CD4 cells per cubic millimetre; (v) being able to communicate in Thai; and (vi) being willing to provide information. Two methods were used in informant selection: (i) purposive sampling; and (ii) theoretical sampling. The data were analysed qualitatively based on Strauss & Corbin’s Grounded Theory. Results:The study led to the following significant findings concerning Southern Thai HIV patients’ adoption of sufficiency economy philosophy as part of the process of restoring balance in life. Firstly, two balance-restoring strategies were identified: (1) adjustment of lifestyle to cope with the disease; and (2) adhering to a path of happiness. Secondly, five factors were identified as contributing to balance restoration: (1) awareness of life’s value, meaning and goals; (2) observation of people with greater difficulty; (3) self-awareness and acceptance of one’s illness; (4) confidence and faith in consequences of actions; and (5) understanding and accepting truths about life. Thirdly, major positive outcomes of balance restoration included happiness, satisfaction and balance in life. Recommendations:The results of this studies may serve as guidelines for healthcare teams and other parties involved in providing holistic care for HIV patients, in an attempt to restore balance in their lives.
