The instruments used in the research were (1) a personal information and health information recording form and (2) a mini nutritional assessment form. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, focusing on the frequency and percentage.

Research Findings: Of all the elderly people surveyed, 62.2% (n = 361) were found to have normal nutritional conditions, whilst 37.8% (n = 219) were identified as facing a risk of hyponutrition. Further assessment revealed that 62.1% of the subjects in the risk group were prone to malnutrition, whilst 31.1% received adequate nutrition and 6.8% were suffering from hyponutrition.

Recommendations: The findings could be applied as a guideline for public health personnel and other stakeholders to arrange health-promoting activities. In addition,health-alert attempts could be made so as to maintain regular assessment of the risk group’s nutritional conditions. Finally, nutrition-restoring activities could be conducted for elderly people suffering from malnutrition.

Thai Journal of Nursing Council 2013; 28(1) 75-84

Keywords: nutritional conditions; elderly people; southernmost border provinces

ER -
