Abstract

The Effectiveness of Triclosan/Copolymer Dentifrice on Plaque Formation and Gingivitis in Pregnant Women

Objective: To study the effectiveness of Triclosan/Copolymer dentifrice on plaque formation and gingivitis in pregnant  women

Study design: Randomized controlled study

Setting: Dental Section, Taksin Hospital

Subjects: 124 pregnant women with 3 months of pregnancy who attended ante natal care services during November  14th,2002 to November 30th, 2003

Method: 124 pregnant women with 3 months of pregnancy were enrolled in this study Triclosan/Copolymer dentifrice  was used in 65 women and standard dentifrice was used in 59 women by simple random sampling technique. Demographic data and oral health status were collected. Oral health status were evaluated by using the plaque index and gingival index 3 times at 3rd, 6th, 8th month of pregnancy.

Main outcome measurement: The plaque index, the gingival index.

Result: Triclosan/Copolymer dentifrice showed significant reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis after continuos using for 5 months when compared to the standard dentrifice.

Conclusion: Triclosan/Copolymer dentifrice was effective to control plaque formation and gingivitis in Pregnant women.
