Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Main findings: Mothers’ perception was divided into 2 main categories, one associated with “uncertainty of the baby’s life with special care need” and the other corresponding to the attempt to “finding causes of having preterm baby”. The mothers’ participatory activities were limited due to their infants’ conditions. Consequently, the participatory activities were grouped into 2 main categories: (i) “following nursing guidelines” including following general instructions (e.g., storing their breast milk for their child and touching their baby every time of their visit); (ii) “doing something arbitrarily” including mother’s own activities such as asking for information of their child and praying to the holy idols for their child’s recovery. An important factor that can either promote or deter the maternal participation was their spouses.

Conclusion and recommendations: Results from this study should assist nurses to gain an insight into maternal participation in caring for preterm infant with respirator and be useful in the implementation and evaluation plans for NICU nurses.

Keywords: maternal participation, premature infant, respirator

ER -
