Data were collected using questionnaires on demographic characteristics, the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale, and the Inventory Functional Status-Cancer. Descriptive statistics by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and predictive testing by multiple regression were used for data analysis.

Main findings: The mean of symptom occurrences was 13 symptoms (range 3-30; SD = 6.22), the most prevalent symptoms experienced by the sample were hair loss, lack of energy, dry mouth, numbness/tingling, and ‘I don’t look like myself ’. The most frequent symptoms were numbness/tingling, problems of urination, dry mouth, sleeping difficulty, and lack of energy. The most severe symptoms were hair loss, difficulty swallowing, pain, lack of appetite, and changes in food taste. The most distressful symptoms were pain, difficulty swallowing, problems of urination, mouth sores, and changes in food taste. The mean of functional status score reported by the subjects was low m = 1.82, SD = .57: possible score 0-4). Hair loss (in symptom occurrence dimension), dry mouth, and feeling sad (in symptom frequency dimension), and worrying (in symptom severity dimension) significantly influenced the functional status (R2 = .048, .053, .047 and .044, p < .05, respectively). No symptom in the distress dimension influenced the functional status.

Conclusion and recommendations: Nurses and other health care providers should pay great attention and assess multiple concurrent symptoms in various dimensions. Intervention research should be developed to manage these symptoms to improve the functional status in hematological malignancy patients receiving chemotherapy.

ER -
