Based on the examinations, the results were divided into two groups, “pass” and “refer”. Infants who failed 2 consecutive OAE tests were reconfirmed by auditory brainstem response (ABR) and/or auditory steady state response (ASSR).

Results: The hearing screening was performed by OAE method in 12,870 (70%) out of 18,380 newborns. The positive result indicating hearing impairment had 1,372 (11%) newborns. These newborns were retested 1 month later using the same method and only 111(0.9%) of them still had positive result. Definite hearing impairment was confirmed in 14 infants which account for the total incidence of hearing impairment of 0.1%.

Conclusion: Newborn hearing screening provided early detection of hearing loss. Retesting after 1 month with the same OAE method raised the specificity of OAE and eliminated false positive results (3%).
ER -
