However data of this organism are few in central region of Thailand because detection of this pathogen are not performed in routinely microbiological laboratory. Regional medical science center Samut Songkhram had to establish Campylobacter isolation and strengthen enteric bacteria performance in our laboratory and hopefully expand to the other lab in our region. We cooperate the multi-center study project of Campylobacter and other enteric pathogens in children under 5 years beneath Armed Forces Research institute of Medical Sciences (AFRIMS) fund. This study demonstrated model development to set up laboratory and purpose data of Campylobacter prevalence in our region. There were 6 hospitals applied in this project. Stool samples were collected from 552 volunteers during October 2004 to November 2006. The target volunteers were divided into 2 the groups, 311 diarrhea cases of children between 3 month to 5 years admitted in the hospitals with acute diarrhea and 241 control cases with the other diseases in the same age group. There were totally 25 (4.5%) samples found Campylobacter which composed of 18 (5.8%) cases and 7 (2.9%) control cases. The prevalent of C.jejuni and C.coIi in 3 month to 2 years children found statistically significance different (p < 0.05, or = 0.05). Campylobacter showed resistance to quinolone and fluoroquinolone as previous reports.
ER -
