Abstract

The objective of this retrospective study was to determined root development after open apex third molar autotransplantation in 14-20 years old patients. The sample comprised 44 patients (16 males, 28 females) and 50 third molars (20 upper molars, 30 lower molars). The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 17.9 years (range 14.2-20.6 years). All transplanted were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 were one-half root formation (n = 16) and group 2 were three-fourth root formation (n = 34) which were clinical success with radiographic examination found completed root formation. Postoperative root development was determined with intraoral radiograph taken at 1 week  to 1 month and at the last final visit which mean follow up period was 7.4 years (2.0-16.7 years). Mean
root length increment in group 1 (3.3 mm) was significant higher than group 2 (2.3 mm) (p < 0.05) but mean final root length in group 1 (10.1 mm) was significant lower than group 2 (11.4 mm) (p < 0.05) which mean final root length of two groups were more than 10.0 mm. Mean final root length in upper third molar (10.0 mm) was lower than lower third molar (11.6 mm) which mean final root
length of two groups were also at least 10.0 mm. Correlation between original root length and root length increment was weak negative relationship. The result indicated that autotransplantation of open apex third molar with one-half to three-fourth root formation provided high success with  ensured sufficient final root length. Therefore, autogenous tooth transplantation was one of viable treatment option to replace nonrestorable tooth, especially the teenage patients.
