Long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation in patient with Parkinson’s disease: a case report

Abstract
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is the condition of the mandibular condyle moving out from glenoid fossa of temporal bone, which represented about 3% of all reported dislocated joints in the body. It can occur during daily routine activities, such as laughing, coughing,vomiting, yawning, chewing, or long-time mouth opening during dental treatment, traumatic tooth extraction, mandibular trauma, fracture or systemic diseases of involuntary muscle spasm, such as Parkinson’s disease. The patient will be locked open, unable to bring their teeth together, difficult to talk and swallow, with deteriorating both physical and mental qualities of life. Treatment of TMJ dislocation divides into conservative and surgical methods.This report documented concerning a case of TMJ dislocation in an 81-year-old female patient with Parkinson’s disease, treated by bilateral eminectomy and condylectomy. After surgery,the patient could close her mouth and swallow saliva normally. No postoperative complication was found. The quality of life of both patient and her caretaker improved. The paper also reviews the concerning literatures.
