Factors Related to the Achievements of the National Licensing Examination Step 1 of Medical Students at Thammasat University

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate learning behavior factors, self-preparation techniques and the attitude toward the National Licensing Examination Step 1 (NLE 1) in order to fi nd out the factors that well correlate with the achievements of NLE 1 of medical students at Thammasat University. The 3rd year medical students (N=140) were assigned to complete the questionnaire after they have got NLE 1’s result. The questionnaire started with the general data including gender, route of entry, cumulative grade point average (GPA), comprehensive-and license-outcome.The other three parts with a rating scale one to five, comprised of 10 domain of learning behavior inventory adapted from Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), 12 self-preparation techniques, and 9 self-report of their attitudes toward the NLE 1. Data were shown as mean ± SD and statistical analysis by using unpaired t-test and one way ANOVA.

The results conferred that signifi cant factors associated with the NLE 1 achievement (p-value < 0.05) were GPA, failing in comprehensive exam, five aspects of learning behavior, three self-preparation techniques, three pro- and one con-attitude towards the NLE 1. Therefore, it is an urgent need to set up an effective system to identify those of poor academic performance especially in comprehensive examination in order to provide them the intervention considerable from this result to enhance their learning capability. All of these lists might help them not only to get better to the achievements of the NLE 1’s score but also to increase their own GPA.
