Abstract

Internet use has increased considerably over the last decade since it can serve as a tool that enhances well-being. There is growing concern about excessive and problematic internet use. Currently, there is no recognition of internet addiction within the spectrum of addictive disorders and, therefore, no corresponding diagnosis listed in the mental health professional's handbook, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Internet addiction has, however, been formally recognized as a disorder and refers to the excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or behaviors regarding computer use and internet access, including the various aspects of its technology, such as online game playing, electronic mail (e-mail) and the website that lead to impairment or distress. Those suffering with an underlying psychological comorbidity may be at serious risk of developing an addiction to the internet. Treatment should address any comorbid conditions present, as those may be causing, or exacerbating, problematic internet use. In addition, the more subtle psychological changes, such as disinhibition, that seem to characterize people’s online behavior also deserve attention, even if they cannot be seen as pathology.
