Knowledge, attitude and practice about AIDS in pregnant women at Thammasat Hospital

Abstract

Objective : 1. To study knowledge, attitude and practice about AIDS in pregnant women.2. To study factors affecting knowledge.

Study design : Descriptive study.Setting : Thammasat university hospital.

Subjects : Three hundred and thirty pregnant women who first attended antenatal clinic between10 January 2004 to 29 April 2004.

Main outcome measures : The demographic data were analysed by percentage and mean. Then age, maritalstatus, habitat, occupation, education status, income, had inform about AIDS andprevious history of sexually transmitted disease which factor(s) affecting knowledgewere assessed by chi- square test (p<0.05).

Result : 59.1% had knowledge about AIDS. Factors significantly affecting knowledge weretheir education status, income and had inform about AIDS. Regarding attitude mainlyin moderate and good level. Concerning practice, if pregnant women knew thatthey had got AIDS, 42.1% would decide terminate pregnancy.

Conclusion : Only 59.1% of pregnant women had knowledge about AIDS. The others lackedknowledge in details. High knowledge about AIDS is seen in high socio-economicstatus, high education level and previously informed about AIDS.
