Experience and Outcome of gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy with VANS technique (Video Assisted Neck Surgery) in Thailand

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of endoscopic thyroidectomy is improving cosmetic results. In Thailand, most of the endoscopic thyroidectomy techniques are gas technique, that may cause some complications such as subcutaneous emphysema or hypercarbia. This study shows our initial experience of gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy using video assisted neck surgery (VANS) method in Thailand. To report the surgical results of gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy with VANS technique.
Method: Descriptive study, collecting data of the patients whom underwent gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy by VANS technique from July 2015 to August 2016 in Thammasat University
hospital.
Results: There were 9 cases of VANS operation with mean thyroid nodule size of 3.30 (1.8 - 4.3) cm. and the mean operative time was 143.67 minutes. Most of them were adenomatous goiters, and one case had occult papillary microcarcinoma. In cosmetic results, 87.50% of the patients were very satisfied and no any serious complication such as hematoma, wound infection or voice
change.
Conclusion: VANS operation is a safe alternative method of endoscopic thyroidectomy with satisfactory cosmetic results.
