Abstract

Anesthesiologists play a vital role in ensuring both the successful completion of an operation and enhancing the postoperative recovery of all surgical phases. The individual elements of this include, a preanesthetic preparation, an intraoperative care, a fluid therapy, a perioperative pain management and finally, a prophylaxis of nausea and vomiting. Therefore, groups of anesthesiologists and surgeons should work as a team; to increase their effectiveness in two distinct areas - patient care and safety. In this regard, they should place emphasis on rapid recovery, optimal pain control, early mobilisation and early oral diet. As a consequence, shorter length of stay in hospital, surgical complications and medical expenses decrease significantly.
