Eighty three participants participated in this study. The sample consisted of 24 nurses and former BCNPY graduates, 10 BCNPY nursing instructors and supportive staff who were selected by purposive sampling, and 14 service users who were selected by convenience sampling. Thirty-five current BCNPY students were selected by proportional sampling. The semi-structured interview guidelines were developed by the principle investigator. Twelve focus groups were conducted, with each group consisting of 5-8 informants. Data were collected from October 2014 to February, 2015. Content analysis was employed for data analysis and a triangulation was carried out.

          Results were as follows:

          1. The humanized health care identities of BCNPY graduates meant providing care with the heart as they would be their own family member, and not just as a job to service users. The identities of the BCNPY consisted of 1) Service-minded 2) Politeness 3) Good nursing skills 4) Analytical thinking, and 5) Patients’ participation. These five factors were related to each other.

          2. Informants agreed that identities could be developed through the nursing course. The useful strategies included providing information and knowledge about humanized health care through teaching and learning. The information was structurally integrated into theoretical and practical courses, as well as through additional student development activities. The ultimate goal was to allow students to learn from real life situations. Reflection was also identified as beneficial as a method to improve awareness leading to essential capacity improvement.

            Suggestion: The College should develop students’ identities through integration of teaching and extra curricula activities, and establish good practice guidelines.

Keyword : identity; humanized health care; nursing graduates

* Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Phayao ; e-mail : supapornudom7@gmail.com
ER -
