Work Environment, Leadership of Head Nurses and Retention of Professional Nurses at a Center Hospital in Chachoengsao Province

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine work environment, the

Leadership of head nurses and retention of professional nurses at a center hospital in chachoengsao province. A simple random sampling was used to recruit of 85 nurses who had more than one year experiences in clinical services. Research instruments included demographic record form, work environment scale, leadership and retention of professional nurse questionnaire. Data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficients statistics.

The results revealed that mean scores of work environment was at a good level (M = 3.59, SD = 0.61). The leadership of head nurses was at a high level (M = 3.80, SD = 0.76).  The retention level of professional nurses was at moderately high (M = 3.36, SD = 0.87). Work environment and leadership of head nurses were moderate and positively correlated with retention of professional nurses (r = .52, r = .36; p < .05). Research findings suggested that nursing administrators should use the research findings as a guideline to improve the working environment and leadership of head nurses with the ability to change management styles according to the changing situation. In order to maintain the professional medical treatment in the organization for a long time and with higher retention.
