Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to compare costs and nursing productivity between conventional and new nurse shift schedules in the nursing department in a 230-bed private hospital. The data were reports of cost and nursing productivity of a sample of 84 nursing personnel from five sub-departments of the outpatient department. The research instruments included a guideline for the new nurse shift schedule, a manual of the new nurse shift schedule, cost records form and nursing productivity records form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests.

The results revealed that the mean total overtime costs for the outpatient department with conventional nurse shift scheduling was 170,646.00 Baht, while the mean for the new nurse shift schedule was 137,899.20 Baht. The difference was significantly different (p < .05). The nursing productivity means for the conventional and new nurse shift schedules were also significantly different (p < .05). The total nursing productivity using the new nurse shift schedule was 110.58%, considerably closer to the standard value the conventional nurse shift schedule (120.80%). The study results indicate that administrators should design new nurse shift schedules to improve cost management and to achieve productivity goals.
