Nursing the world to health: The power of nurses in achieving challenging goals

Abstract

World Health Assembly declared 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife to raise the awareness of global society regarding the great contributions of nursing and midwifery profession toward Global Health development. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, nurses and midwives play a crucial role in promoting equity in accessing to quality and efficient health services through Universal Health Coverage. However, the shortage of nursing manpower becomes a challenging issue for the government to urgently resolve by investing nursing education, increasing jobs, and nursing leadership development. The future direction proposed in Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health Workforce 2030 and the State of the World’s Nursing Report 2020 should be applied for the national workforce plan development. The celebration of the year of the nurse and midwife using the theme of the International Nurses Day in 2020, " Nurses: A Voice to Lead Nursing the World to Health ", has been evidently portrayed through the nursing contribution in COVID-19 pandemic situation. Nurses must collaboratively work with the National Nurses Association to exercise their collective powers and unity in order to concretely achieve the challenging goal of “ Nursing the World to Health ”.
