Nurses’ roles in caring for obese patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

Abstract
The world’s most frequently encountered malnutrition issue and continues to rise in an upward trend, is obesity which is the condition of excessive body weight and fat including endocrine and metabolic disorders. It has health effects on the occurrence of chronic illness, as well as social and psychological problems. At present, a diverse number of treatment guidelines are used including surgical and non-surgical methods. Surgical treatments are currently the most effective treatment in reducing body weight among obese patients. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is the most popular surgery. This article aims to help nurses gain more knowledge and understanding about the obesity situation, factors influencing obesity, its effects on health, treatment for obesity, and nurses’ roles in providing holistic care for obese patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in the periods of before treatment, after treatment, and home care preparation for the purposes of ensuring patient safety and improving their quality of life.
