Nurses’ role in nutritional care in pediatric short bowel syndrome
Main Article Content
Abstract
The role of pediatric nurses is critical in supporting families and children with gastrointestinal disorders, including short bowel syndrome and long-term parenteral nutrition care at home. Children with these conditions are at risk of malnutrition due to the disease pathology, and prolonged parenteral nutrition can lead to complications such as intestinal failure, liver failure, and infections. This article aims to enhance understanding of short bowel syndrome in children and highlight the role of nurses in providing family-centered care. The focus is on three critical stage: 1) maintaining good nutritional status in children, 2) managing post-surgical care to optimize nutrient absorption from the remaining intestine, and 3) preventing complications both in clinical and at home. The effectiveness of nursing care in balancing intestinal function and ensuring adequate nutrition directly influences the quality of life for children with short bowel syndrome and their families, affecting both economic and psychosocial aspects.
