ํThe role of psychiatric nurse in mental health promotion and depression prevention for older adults with chronic illness
Main Article Content
Abstract
Older adults with chronic illnesses are at high risk of developing mental health problems, particularly depression, which negatively affects their quality of life and self-care capacity. Psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in promoting mental health and preventing depression among older adults with chronic conditions by applying a holistic care approach informed by relevant theories, including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Jahoda’s Positive Mental Health. Their roles encompass mental health assessment, counseling and psychotherapy, mental health promotion, support for adaptation, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and advocacy for patients’ rights. As well as the application of digital mental health technology such as online counseling, mental health applications, and telehealth follow-up services—represents a significant contemporary trend. These roles contribute to enhancing older adults’ ability to cope with chronic illnesses, reducing the risk of depression, and sustaining long-term mental well-being, which is essential for improving the overall quality of life of older adults in Thai society.
