The maternal periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes

Abstract
Subsequent morbidity and mortality of preterm birth and low birth weight infants have been leading problems in public health in Thailand. This paper reviews the association between maternal periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies revealed that the pregnant women with periodontitis were higher risk of delivering preterm birth and low birth weight infants compared with those without the disease. These findings suggest that new oral health approaches could be developed to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes. The essential contribution of oral health cares, the periodontal therapy, should be considered as a necessary part of prenatal care. As a result, the comprehensive pregnancy health care programme would be established for a closer communication and improved consultation between medical and dental professionals.
