Prevalence and incidence of potential malignance disorder and oral cancer by organized community screening model in 5 districts of Roiet Province

Abstract

This prevalence and incidence report of potential malignant disorders (PMDss) and oral cancer by community organized screening was done in 5 districts of Roiet province. The population was 57,763 adults aged 40 years old and over which health volunteers sent them self-administered questionnaire of risk behavior and self-oral screening form. The 3,428 people who reported having oral lesion were appointed to have oral visual screening by dental nurses at the sub district health promoting hospitals and then 407 people who found having oral lesions by dental nurses were referred to dentists at the community hospitals. The 201 people came for the appointment, whose some lesions have been cured and 99 patients were referred to meet maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS) at Roiet hospital. 88 people came for their appointment, after examined by OMFS, 44 patients been advised to have biopsy for definite diagnosis, there were just only 10 people who accepted to be biopsied and one person were found to have squamous cell carcinoma, 6 people having PMDss, and 3 people for fibroma. The prevalence of PMDss which has been diagnosed by dentists and OMFS was 150.1 persons per 100,000 population and 86.0 persons per 100,000 population respectively, and oral cancer incidence diagnosed by dentists and OMFS was 2 persons per 100,000 population, the same result as biopsy. The first two risk behaviors of oral cancer and oral lesions among the 201 people were smoking and alcohol drinking, and betel nut chewing respectively.
