Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the association factor of edentulousness among the Thai elderly patients in department of dentistry, Sukhothai hospital. Subject comprised of 125 elderly patients aged 60-87 years residing in Ampur Muang , Sukhothai province during Oct 2005 - Sept 2006. The data were obtained through oral examination and interview. Result showed that, of the 125 elderly patients, 82.4% were completely edentulous and 10.4% were edentulous in only one arch. A significant association was found in bivariate analysis for age, gender, the type of dental service sought in last 5 years, medical history level of medication, and income. Chi-square test showed a significant and independent association between edentulousness and general health problem and gender (P value < 0.05). In conclusion, general health problems and gender were significant factors for edentulousness in this population.
