Why is dental health education not effective?

Abstract
Dental health education is based on a belief on the power of individuals, to take control and improve their oral health behaviours. Thus, it focuses on the improvement of individual determinants such as knowledge and attitude as believes that this would finally lead to the improvement of behaviours. Unfortunately, oral health behaviours are not simply determined by individuals' own will, but complicatedly influenced by social factors such as culture, social values, social cohesion, environmental and economic conditions. These social determinants, where environment-related factors also have the influence on socio-cultural factors, gradually shape behaviours of people on societies. Understanding the social determinants of oral health behaviours would bring on oral health promotion strategies that possibly successfully improve people's oral health behaviours.
