Abstract
Toothbrush is regarded as a basic tool for keeping good oral health. As various types and prices of toothbrushes are sold in Thailand, right information for buying appropriate toothbrushes should be available for Thais. This study was carried out to explore features of toothbrushes sold in Thailand in 2000. Toothbrushes were randomly sampled from stores located in both Bangkok and other provinces. 46 brands and 223 models ( 179 adult and 44 kid models ) were sampled and examined in laboratory. The toothbrushes were compared on aspects of handle, bristle and head by measuring their width, length and thickness. The vernia calipper and digital micrometer were used for measurement while the digital free gauge ( Chatillon ®) was utilized for measuring bristle retention. Bristle ends were examined by microscope at 40X. The study found 17 models ( 7.6 % ) having sharp head, 16 models ( 7.2%) having hard bristles, 47 models ( 21.1 %) having no round end bristles. 84.7 % labelled as soft, medium and hard bristles were correspondent with the result of examination as well as were 40.4 % labelled as having round end bristles. The adult toothbrushes which met the Health Department Standard were priced between 10 - 103 Bath where as the kid toothbrushes which met the standard were priced between 5 - 56 Bath. Most toothbrushes sold in Thailand were safe for oral health maintenance nevertheless, prices were often not relative to quality.
