บทคัดย่อ
ทันตาภิบาลเป็นบุคลากรที่มีส่วนสำคัญในการส่งเสริมป้องกันทันตสุขภาพของประชาชน มีชื่อต่างกันหลายชื่อในภาษาอังกฤษ เช่น dental nurse, dental therapist, dental hygienist หรือ oral health therapist ทันตาภิบาลในแต่ละประเทศมีบทบาทหน้าที่ต่างกัน ไม่มีรูปแบบตายตัวว่าถ้าเรียกชื่อเดียวกัน จะมีหลักสูตรการเรียนการสอนหรือขอบเขตหน้าที่การปฏิบัติงานเหมือนกัน เพราะแม้รับรูปแบบมาจากประเทศต้นแบบเดียวกัน คือ dental nurse ของนิวซีแลนด์ แต่ละประเทศก็นำมาปรับให้เข้ากับบริบทของประเทศตนเอง ส่วนใหญ่ dental hygienist เน้นการส่งเสริมป้องกันในเด็กและผู้ใหญ่ ให้บริการทั้งในภาครัฐและเอกชน ส่วน dental therapist มีการรักษามากกว่าและเน้นให้การรักษาในกลุ่มเด็กที่มารับบริการทันตกรรมในโรงเรียน ปัจจุบันมีการพัฒนาหลักสูตรรวม dental therapist และ dental hygienist เข้าด้วยกันเรียกว่า oral health therapist เพื่อเพิ่มศักยภาพในการทำงานให้ครอบคลุมและมีทางเลือกในการปฏิบัติงานมากขึ้น มีหน่วยงานควบคุมดูแลการปฏิบัติงานของทันตาภิบาลต่างกันในแต่ละประเทศ ได้แก่ ทันตแพทย์สภา กระทรวงสาธารณสุข หรือคณะกรรมการด้านทันตกรรมแห่งชาติ ประเทศที่ทันตาภิบาลสามารถทำงานในภาคเอกชนได้ มักมีข้อกำหนดให้ทันตาภิบาลต้องมีใบอนุญาตประกอบวิชาชีพ และมีข้อกำหนดในการต่ออายุใบอนุญาต
