การเปรียบเทียบความคิดเห็นและผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษาที่เรียนกับ อาจารย์เจ้าของภาษาและอาจารย์ชาวไทย (A Comparison of Opinions and English Proficiency between Students Studying with Native English-Speaking Teachers and Those with Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers)

Abstract

             ในวงการศึกษาของไทยพบว่าข้อถกเถียงเรื่องผู้สอนวิชาภาษาอังกฤษระหว่างครูเจ้าของภาษากับครูที่ไม่ใช่เจ้าของภาษาว่าใครเหมาะสมกว่ากันนั้น ยังไม่สามารถหาข้อยุติที่แน่ชัดได้ เนื่องจากการศึกษาในประเด็นดังกล่าวมีจำนวนน้อย ซึ่งยังทำให้ผู้เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษาด้านนี้ขาดความเข้าใจต่อครูผู้สอนทั้งสองกลุ่มด้วย บทความนี้จึงมีจุดประสงค์ที่จะอธิบายประเด็นปัญหาดังกล่าว โดยอ้างอิงผลการศึกษาของผู้วิจัยที่เปรียบเทียบความคิดเห็นต่อครูผู้สอนและผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษาระดับมหาวิทยาลัยที่เรียนกับอาจารย์เจ้าของภาษาและอาจารย์ชาวไทย เพื่อหาข้อดีและข้อควรปรับปรุงของอาจารย์ทั้งสองกลุ่มและเพื่อพัฒนาการเรียนการสอนต่อไป ทั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้เสนอแนะแนวทางในการพัฒนาผู้สอนเพื่อการเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษที่มีประสิทธิภาพยิ่งขึ้นไว้ในตอนท้ายด้วย

               Over the years the choice of whether to assign native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) or non-NESTs to conduct English teaching in Thailand has been the subject of much debate. Unfortunately, research dedicated to casting more light on this problem is very scarce, thus triggering the development of misunderstanding of the two groups of teachers. The current paper aims to directly address this issue by means of an empirical study. A comparison of Thai university students who were trained by NESTs and those studying with Thai instructors was made to investigate their opinions on the instructors’ and their English proficiency. In doing so, the strengths and weaknesses of the two groups of instructors could be identified. Suggestions with regard to the development of instructors for more effective English classrooms are also given in the final section of the paper.
