Indonesia is a country with rich linguistic and ethnic diversity. Indonesia is one of the world’s most renown countries in terms of ethnic diversity due to its approximately 17,000 islands, each with inhabitants of different ethnic groups with distinct language and culture, giving Indonesia over 1,000 local languages. Indonesia had also been a Dutch colony for over 300 years. Thus, this research hypothesized that Indonesia would have different language use situations that vary with different domains. However, research into the language situations of Indonesia reveal that Bahasa Indonesia is the only language that stands out.

The study of language choice in the domains of law, media, education, literature, and politics in Indonesia found that Bahasa Indonesia plays the greatest role in all domains. For example, in the domain of law, Bahasa Indonesia is the language of choice in the drafting of constitution. In the domain of media, it became evident that after 1949 newspapers chose to print in Bahasa Indonesia rather than in local languages. In education and literature, a large number of books, Bahasa Indonesia were found. This is due to the government policy of using national language as a key factor for nation-building and national identity creation.
