บทความนี้เรียบเรียงขึ้นจากเนื้อหาบางส่วนในวิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง ศิลปะภาพเงาดำของคาร่า วอล์คเกอร์: การพลิกคตินิยมที่มีต่อชาวแอฟริกัน-อเมริกัน ซึ่งมีจุดประสงค์หลัก คือ ศึกษาเทคนิคและแรงบันดาลใจของศิลปินหญิงชาวอเมริกันผิวดำนามว่า คาร่า วอล์คเกอร์ และวิเคราะห์จุดมุ่งหมายที่ศิลปินต้องการสื่อผ่านกลวิธีการนำเสนอผลงานศิลปะของศิลปิน

แนวความคิดเกี่ยวกับสีผิวและชาติพันธุ์ไม่ได้เป็นเรื่องใหม่สำหรับศิลปินอเมริกันผิวดำ ปัญหาเรื่องเชื้อชาติในอเมริกาเกิดขึ้นจากทัศนคติและอคติที่ฝังรากลึกมาแต่อดีต ซึ่งในปัจจุบันยังคงเป็นปัญหาระดับชาติที่คนอเมริกันหลีกเลี่ยงที่จะกล่าวถึง มีศิลปินอเมริกันผิวดำจำนวนมากที่สร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะขึ้นโดยได้แรงผลักดันจากอคติเรื่องเชื้อชาติ และคาร่า วอล์คเกอร์ก็เป็นหนึ่งในนั้น

ความน่าสนใจในภาพเงาดำของคาร่า วอล์คเกอร์  คือ การประท้วงเงียบ เพื่อต่อกรกับการเสนอภาพเชิงลบของคนผิวดำที่เป็นคตนิยมในสื่อกระแสหลักด้วยการใช้ภาพแบบเดียวกันที่ดูสนุกสนาน แต่แฝงความหดหู่ ซึ่งเป็นกลวิธีการนำเสนอภาพซ้ำเพื่อเสียดสีประชดประชัน โดยสร้างบรรยากาศจากประวัติศาสตร์ช่วงก่อนสงครามกลางเมืองในอเมริกาผนวกกับจินตนาการที่มาจากนิยายรักโรแมนติก ออกมาเป็นภาพที่ดูราวกับฝันร้ายของศิลปิน ด้วยมีเจตนาที่จะกระตุ้นเตือนผู้ชมให้ได้ตระหนัก ตั้งคำถามถึงปมปัญหาเรื่องสีผิว และวิพากษ์สังคมในยุคปัจจุบัน

Abstract

This article is adapted from a part of thesis entitled “Kara Walker’s Silhouette Art: A Twist on African-American Stereotypes.” The main objective of the thesis is to explore Kara Walker’s technique, inspiration, and strategy to understand and analyze her silhouette artwork.

Race and representation is not the new subject in African-American art. Race and racism in the United States is the legacies of the past and persists in the present while American people are reluctant to admit that racism still exists. Many African American artists therefore create their art from an impulse of racial prejudice in society, and Kara Walker is one of them.

Kara Walker’s work is implicitly satirical suggesting a silenced protest against negative stereotypes of the images of the black in the mainstream media. The artist intentionally rearticulates such racial stereotypes of black characters that appear to be in ecstasy and melancholy as irony. Distorted antebellum scenes and imagery inspired by romantic novels were depicted in her silhouettes where fact and fiction are manipulated from the artist’s nightmares. She intends her work to provoke and raise questions about racial issues as well as being social commentary in modern days.
