            บทความนี้ได้ศึกษาผลงานวิจัยและการทำงานด้านโบราณคดีเมืองในพื้นที่เมืองสำคัญต่างๆ ของโลก โดยมีคำถามสำคัญ คือ โบราณคดีเมืองคืออะไร แนวคิดและวิธีการศึกษา การตีความบริบททางโบราณคดีเมืองเพื่อให้เข้าใจพื้นที่เมืองและวิถีชีวิตเมืองในอดีต และทรัพยากรทางโบราณคดีเมืองกับการอนุรักษ์และจัดการ

          จากการศึกษาพบว่า คำว่า “โบราณคดีเมือง” เป็นการศึกษาโบราณคดีที่ทำงานในพื้นที่เมืองและการศึกษาเมืองในบริบทของแหล่งโบราณคดี วิธีการศึกษาโบราณคดีเมืองจะต้องมีความเข้าใจแนวคิดต่างๆ เรื่องเมือง เช่น เมืองร่วมสมัยในปัจจุบัน กระบวนการกลายเป็นเมือง ธรรมชาติของพื้นที่เมือง การทับถมและชั้นหลักฐานทางโบราณคดี รวมไปถึงการจัดจำแนกหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีประเภทเมือง นอกจากนี้งานโบราณคดีเมืองยังมีความสัมพันธ์กับผู้คนที่ยังอยู่อาศัยในพื้นที่เมืองในปัจจุบัน

Abstract

            This article is a study of current research on urban archaeology in the global context. The main questions are 1) what is urban archaeology 2) what are the concepts and approaches for urban archaeology, 3) how to define the urban archaeological context in order to understand urban space and life and 4) how to conserve and manage the archaeological heritage in urban context.

          The results revealed that the definition of urban archaeology refers to the study of archaeology in the cities covering different types of archaeological sites.  The urban archaeological approaches are the integrative approach composing of the concept of living city and urbanization, the nature of space as well as the archaeological concept of urban archaeology including urban deposits and finds.  Finally, urban archaeology also relates to the contemporary societies.
