Abstract

The area around the mouth of northern Bangkok Noi Canal, Aroon Amarin Road, Bangkok Noi District, is one of the most ancient sites of Bangkok.

Documents, maps, old and new photographs are gathered. The study is conducted through field surveys, observations and interviews with local learned men. Then the information will be analysed to create the understanding of local history of the area.

The study reveals that the area around the mouth of northern Bangkok Noi Canal was once a plantation area in Ayutthaya era. After the fall of Ayutthaya in 2310 B.E. (1767 A.D.), Thais and Muslims evacuated into the area and settled down ever since. Despite their difference in religions, Thais and Muslims have always lived together peacefully with mutual help and understanding. Through occurrence of economic and social changes after the city development in 2510 B.E. (1967 A.D.), the Thai and Muslim communities in this area have always tried to adapt and sustain their culture and knowledge.

This study, hopefully, will result in a better understanding of the community, creating communal pride among insiders and outsiders alike. Eventually, this will lead to the forthcoming participation in creative conservation and sustainable development of the area.
