Abstract

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder mucosa, mainly caused by infection, especially bacteria, occurring among female more than males due to a shorter urethra and a closer position to the anus. The contaminated bacteria can easily infect the urethra through to the bladder. Those having cystitis incur a greater chance of having recurrent cystitis, and when the infection has recurred several times, the chance of a new episode recurring is even higher. Several times, recurrent or chronic cystitis causes multiple losses to individuals, to the economy and to society. Behavioral factors that stimulate cystitis among women include holding urination for a long period, unhygienic care of genitals and contraceptive use of spermicide. Motivational counseling is one way to modify a patient’s behavior to reduce disease occurrence or health problems providing brief advice and intervention. This approach was used among a number of female patients with cystitis (29 control and 32 counseling group). After following up for 12 months, recurrent cystitis showed 27.6% (8/29) in the control group and 6.25% (2/32) in the counseling group, showing that this approach could significantly reduce the rate of recurrent cystitis. Therefore, motivational counseling to create adherent and appropriate health behavior could be one effective way to prevent recurrent cystitis among females.
