Abstract

ABSTRACT

The cross sectional study aimed to study self-care behavior, factors relating to self-care behavior of elderly diabetic patient and study variable factor which predict self-care behavior of elderly diabetic patient in Public Health Center, Department of Health, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The samples consisted of 400 elderly patients who attended the diabetic clinic at Public Health Center, Department of Health. Data were collected during 1 January 2009 - 31 January 2010. The qualitative data were collected by using questionnaires, whereas, the quantitative data were collected by deep interview and group interview. The qualitative results revealed the elderly diabetic patient had high level of 6 self-care behaviors which were the treatment plan follow up, daily activity, diet control, physical exercise, and disease and symptom-self monitoring. The elderly had high level of stress management which also related to health knowledge, the ability of self-care, the disease severity perception, and social support. The factors which had the highest predictive value for self-care behavior was the self-healthcare ability followed by social support, sex, and age respectively. These all factors could 39% predicted the self-care behavior. The quantitative data indicated the problems which the elderly facing were health, economic, and social problems. The elderly diabetic patients were good in health knowledge and ability in self-care that resulted in good self-care behavior. The effective social supports were family and home visit nurses. So the related persons including family, friends, public health workers, and health volunteer should cooperated working to promote better self-care of the elderly to control their normal blood sugar level and develop less complication.
