Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to manage the waste problems of the community, usingparticipatory action research (PAR) based on the appreciation influence control (AIC) technique. Thetarget groups were community leaders, community members, community health volunteers and peoplerepresented from 3 communities, which were Wat Thepnaree, Masyeet Bang-ao and Charan 79, Bangplatdistrict, Bangkok Metropolitan. The participatory action research method, including a communitymeeting for brainstorming, problem solving, project planning, and evaluation, was used to obtainthe data. The instruments consisted of three sets of questionnaires including knowledge of wasteproblems, perceived self-efficacy of waste management, and perceived benefit of waste management.Content analysis and descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The results showed that themean score of the knowledge of waste problems, perceived self-efficacy of waste management, andperceived benefit of waste management, after implementing community participation based on theAIC technique, was higher than before the implementation (p< 0.001). People can perform activitiesto solve waste problems by themselves. The sustainability of waste management should be drivenby community participation. Therefore, community participation is one method leading to theempowerment of a sustainable community environment. The finding should be put into practiceextensively in another community.
