ABSTRACT

Several computer-based visual screening programs have been used successfully with children of the western countries. However, they do not seem practical for Thai children due to a difference in culture and language. To implement the visual screening for Thai children. A new eye-care recording program has been developed for interfacing with commercially-developed visual screening software. This combined programme had been tested on 121 preschool children, aged 5-7 years of the Bangkok under the supervision of trained personnel. 35 children not passed this visual screening test. 14 of them were diagnosed as visually deficient by an optometrist -7 with Amblyopia, 4 with Hyperopia & Astigmatism and the other 3 with Astigmatism, Myopia and Latent hyperopia. The sensitivity and specificity of this new Program were 74.7% and 84.4% respectively. Regarding the use of the Program, the user satisfaction was at a high level. The result obtained from this study demonstrated that the Program was reliable, but not sufficient enough for Thai children, indicated the need for a new program specifically designed for them.
