Abstract

ABSTRACT

This qualitative research aimed to synthesize knowledge of community health system development in Health Promoting Society, Banna Municipality, Banna District, Nakhon Nayok Province. Three components which were analyzed in this study include: 1) concrete community health system development, 2) outputs of the development, and 3) conditions of success. Qualitative data was collected on June 2008 from in-depth interview, focus group discussions, observation, and existing documents. Key informants were professional nurses, village headmen, community committees and leaders, public health volunteers, exercise leaders and society members. Content analysis of the data was performed. Findings reveal that the concrete community health system development consisted of three processes; 1) seeking and utilizing community health problems and the need to identify goals, 2) seeking and utilizing the social capital of the locality to engage in the process of development, and 3) designing health care services consistent with community health promotion needs. Outputs of the development include the existence of a Health Promoting Society founded by community members for community health care, society members having more health promotion capacity, better health, and developing pride in community health promotion. Conditions of success of the Health Promoting Society include having community participation, matching community needs, and utilizing their social capital to implement community health care. These indicated that community health system development with community engagement is valuable and sustainable.
