ABSTRACT
This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of an Informational and Emotional Support Program on stress, knowledge, and child caring behavior among parents of children with respiratory tract infection. Subjects included 30 parents of children with acute respiratory tract infection admitted in the pediatric ward at a hospital in Chiang Mai province during February 2008 to February 2009. They were purposively selected and were assigned in equal numbers to experimental and comparative groups. Subjects in experimental group received the Informational and Emotional Support Program while those in comparative group received standard nursing care. The research instruments included the Informational and Emotional Support Program, Computer Learning Program Regarding Caring for Children with Respiratory Tract Infection and an Opinion Questionnaire about the Computer Learning Program. Data collection instruments included the Demographic Data Record Form, the Knowledge and Child Caring Behavior Questionnaire, and Thai Stress Test. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The results revealed that: The knowledge scores regarding child care of the experimental group, after receiving the Informational and Emotional Support Program were higher than the comparative group with statistical significance (p < 0.01). The knowledge scores regarding child care of the experimental group, after receiving the program was also higher than before with statistical significance (p < 0.01). The results indicated that nurse should realize the importance of informational and emotional support which helps to enhance parental knowledge regarding the care of hospitalized children. This would lead to increase parental capacity in caring their children during hospitalization.
