Abstract

ABSTRACT

This participatory action research aimed to develop a model package for enhancing quality of life of HIV/AIDS affected persons aged 50 and over. The project was run in 43 villages/communities of 4 districts in Chiang Mai and there were 348 HIV/AIDS affected older persons: 14 infected and 334 indirectly affected. The study was conducted during October 2004 to December 2006. Three steps of model package development included: (1) situation and policy analysis and dissemination of findings to involved persons and public, (2) developing and testing the model package, and (3) project evaluation, adjustment, summary and report.

The study findings reveal that model package included activities to alleviate economic, health, and social impacts of HIV/AIDS. The developed model package was implemented and adjusted to apposite with each area. It was found that the package can yield the specified outcomes. All objective verifiable indicators were met. Awareness of the issues among involved persons and general public increased; care giving burden of affected older persons decreased; and their quality of life increased. However, degree of success was dependent on factors including leadership of key persons, and capacity of working group. These factors, therefore, need to be considered for further package implementation. The results demonstrated that multisectoral and multidisciplinary approaches with community participation and support from local administrators can result in success and sustainability of project activities.
