Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed at investigating the effects of planned teaching program on caregivers’ knowledge and practice in care for children with acute diarrhea.

          Design: A quasi-experimental study.

Methods: The research subjects consisted of 30 caregivers who took their children aged between 2 and 10 years old, suffering from acute diarrhea, to receive medical service at pediatric outpatient departments of two private hospitals. Data were collected between June and November 2017. The subjects were divided into the control and experimental groups with 15 subjects each. The experimental group took part in the planned teaching program which consisted of activities determined in lesson plan including knowledge given with the use of computer media, demonstration and return-demonstrations along with a session of question and discussion, as well as provision of advice and praises to the caregivers. Meanwhile, the control group received a usual care. The instruments for data collection consisted of two assessment forms for knowledge and practice. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and paired t-test.

Main Findings: The findings of the study revealed that, in the experimental group, caregiver’s mean score of knowledge after participating in the program was significantly higher than that before participating in the program (t = -12.118, p < .05). Compared to their counterparts, caregivers in the experimental group also had significantly higher mean score of knowledge after participating in the program (t = - 5.478, p < .05). The program showed its effect on practice of the caregivers; that is, 80% of the caregivers (or 12 out of 15) could practice correctly by obtaining practice score more than 80%.

Conclusion and recommendations:  The planned teaching program helped increase knowledge and proper practice among caregivers in care for children with acute diarrhea. The findings suggest the usefulness of integrating computer media, demonstration and return-demonstration in teaching caregivers.
