Abstract

Objectives :  To evaluate the long term results of high tibial osteotomy and analyze relationships between results and possible associated factors.

Methods :  A prospective follow up of  39 knees of 39 patients who had undergone closed wedge high tibial osteotomies for varus osteoarthritis between 1996 and 2004 with average follow up of 10.12 years.  Clinical results were evaluated using the knee score of American Knee Society Score.

Results :  Satisfactory results  were 89.73% at 5 years and 53.84% at the final follow up. High BMI (≥25 kg/m2) and knee flexion contracture ≥ 15º were significantly associated with poor result at long term.  The recurrence of the deformity after 5 years was found more than that in the early period.

Conclusion : High tibial osteotomy is proper choice of treatment for varus osteoarthritis knee patients who had high level of activity. In addition, BMI ≥25 kg/m2 and Knee flexion contracture ≥ 15  are important factors for long term results.
