Outcomes of gauze protection during simple extraction: a pilot study

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of gauze protection during simple extraction. The data were collected from the patients and the operators using the questionnaire in term of the experience during their simple extraction under gauze throat screen technique. The available data were analyzed by descriptive and comparative statistics. From 3 December 2018 to 28 February 2019, there was no incidence of swallowed foreign bodies. One hundred and eighty-three fully completed questionnaires were returned. All patients aged between 12 and 79 years (mean 41.0 ± 20.3 years). One hundred and twenty-seven patients (69.4%) could accept gauze throat technique especially group of age over 61 years old (n = 37; 30.3%) and 1-5 times experience of extraction (n = 80; 63.0%) presented the most. The operators; undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, were 71 male (38.8%) and 112 female (61.2%). Almost half of the 5th year dental students completed the questionnaire (n = 90; 49.2%) and accepted using gauze throat screen technique (n = 71; 55.9%). A significant age of the patients (p < 0.01) and experience of the operators (p < 0.001) were defined as the factors of accepting gauze throat screen technique (chi-square test). Concerning the results of the present study, the gauze throat screen technique has the advantages of improving the quality of treatment.
