Effects of deacidifying method on shear bond strength: application to surgically assisted artificial eruption

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of shear bond strength (SBS) between orthodontic attachment and enamel using various deacidifying methods. Orthodontic attachments bonding were performed in vitro on 40 upper first premolars, which were then divided into four groups (n = 10) by deacidifying methods as follows, 1) wipe off with gauze 2)rinsing with 0.9% normal saline solution 3) rinsing with distilled water and 4) rinsing with water from triple syringe. The SBS test was performed in an Instron universal testing machine. The data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA. The wipe off with gauze group had significantly lower SBS than others (p ≤ 0.001) while other groups had no significant difference. In conclusion, rinsing with 0.9% normal saline solution, distilled water or water from triple syringe provided no significant difference of SBS between orthodontic attachment and enamel. For preventing surgical wound infection and facilitating wound healing, rinsing with 0.9% normal saline solution is recommended in surgically assisted artificial eruption of impacted and embedded teeth procedures.
