The accuracy between measurement of Demirjian method and Gleiser and Hunt method modified by Kçhler to test chronological age of 18 years old in Thai population

Abstract
The objectives of the study was to compare accuracy between measurement of Demirjian method and Gleiser and Hunt method modified by Kçhler to test chronological age of 18 years old in Thai population. A total of 593 digital panoramic radiographs of Thai individuals aged between 9 and 22 years who visited Dental Department of Chonburi Hospital during 2015-2018 were selected to assess age. The age was calculated using Demirjian method and Gleiser and Hunt method modified by Kçhler based on the developmental stages of the mandibular third molar. All of the population with the average age over 18 years had the mandibular third molar teeth in stage G (parallel root walls with open apices), and stage H (apex completed) of Demirjian method and stage 8 (root completed with open apices), stage 9 (apex half closed), and stage 10 (apex completed) of Gleiser and Hunt method modified by Kçhler. Males were likely to reach the tooth developmental stages earlier than females. There was no significant difference in age calculation between right and left mandibular third molars from both methods. The calculation of age using Demirjian method was approximate to chronological age and age calculated by Gleiser and Hunt method modified by Kçhler was over-estimated. In conclusion, age calculation in Thai population using Demirjian method had higher percentage of accuracy compared to Gleiser and Hunt method modified by Kçhler.
