Factors influencing health promoting behaviors of elderly in elderly school at Bansuan Municipality, Mueang District, Chonburi Province

Abstract

This is a cross-sectional studyexamining factors influencing health promoting behaviors of elderly using Pender health promotion model as a conceptual framework. The sample were 200 elderly persons living in BanSuan Municipality and being membersof elderly school at Mueang district, Chonburi Province. Data collection was conducted by using Personal information, the short version of Thai Mental Health Indicator, and Health promoting behavior questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression.

Results showed that mean score of overall health promoting behaviors among elderly in Ban Suan Municipality was at high level. Sufficient income and mental health status had significant positive relationship at weak (r = .16, p < .05) and moderate (r = .45, p < .01) levels with health promoting behaviors, and to predict health promoting behaviors of elderly at Ban Suan Municipality. However, age, gender, marital status, religion, education, occupation, body mass index, and chronic illness had no relationship with health promoting behaviors of elderly at Ban Suan Municipality in Chonburi Province. The recommendation for relatedstakeholder is to integrate the findings in this study especially sufficient income and mental health status for improvement and development of health promoting behaviors in elderly.
