Abstract
Background: The Elderly school was set up for promoting education about necessary knowledge and skills for the elderly which was based on the participation among the local community and network.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were i) To study the model of participation between Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Pitsanulok and community in health promotion program development for Ban Khao-Smor-Klang Elderly School, Wangthong district, Phitsanulok Province, and ii) To examine the effectiveness of the programs.
Methods: Participatory action research design (PAR) and quasi-experimental design were used for this study. There were 2 groups of subjects which were selected by purposive sampling; i) the group of 15 persons who participated to develop the programs, and ii) the group of 41 elderly who joined and completed the programs. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected by the interview questionaires of the researcher. Content analysis and Paired T- test were used to analyse the data.
Results: The participation model consisted of 6 components; I) program partners: committees came from many of partnerships in the community; II) location: the buldings in the local temple were used as classrooms; III) timing: the program activities were set 2 times per month; IV) budget: Local Government Organization was the sector who supported for the program money; V) program contents: the program was designed in collaboration with Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Pitsanulok and the community, and the students had opportunities to be the educators and also organised activities for the programs; and VI) future program sustainability: Sirindhorn College of Public Health, Pitsanulok lead the groups for lesson learned conclusion. For the program effectiveness evaluation, the results found that: after joining the programs for 6 months, the elderly had statistical significant improvement in their eating behaviors (p< .05). In addition, the body fat percentage level had decreased (p < .001 และ p < .05). Moreover, the muscle mass had increased (p < .01).
The programs which were designed and implemented from community participations were appropriate to elderly school contexts in the community and also the programs had improved the healthy aging. Other higher education institutions in public health, and the others of elderly school managers, should use the model from this study to be the good master in participative corrabolation for health promotion program development for the others areas in the future.
