Community participation for the Surveillance of emergency cardiovascular disease, Thepkeere sub-district, Na Wang, Nongbua Lamphu

The emergency illness of cardiovascular diseases is the main cause of death and the survivors of stroke will mostly have disabilities. If the emergency patients have been referred to hospitals in time appropriately can reduce death and disability. This Participatory Action Research (PAR) included 3 steps had been used. The plan was the first step to explore the situations and effects of cardiovascular disease in the area based Thepkeree sub-district. The second step was action to address the surveillance, the barriers and community needs of Emergency Cardiovascular Disease. The third step was reflection and discussion for improving emergency caring patterns. Collecting data by using in-depth interviews and group discussion with four major organizations in the community; 30 Representatives from local governments, community leaders, health care staff, and villagers. The result showed community participation was the key success of the Surveillance of Emergency Cardiovascular Disease. The health care volunteers took the major roles to give information related to cardiovascular aspects and encourage villagers to promote their health. The main barriers were villagers lack knowledge to prevent stroke and lack of appropriate referral system. Recommendations were addressed in 3 main points. There are followings, improving emergency care model, strengthening volunteer capacities for emergency care, and establishing health promoting activity groups to prevent and protect themselves from cardiovascular disease.
